January Field Trip - CHANGED! Sunrise at Long Pine Key

  • Long Pine Key Picnic Area undefined (map)

Sorry folks, due to a strong storm front coming into the area this weekend, we’ve decided to switch things up a bit. Rather than drive 80+ miles to a location with severe thunderstorms (predicted), we’re going to stay closer to home! Instead of Marsh Trail we’ll head into the Everglades to Long Pine Key because… the storm front won’t have made it to Miami early in the morning, and… there’s fog predicted! Now I can’t guarantee it, but it looks promising, more promising than birds and a sunset in a thunderstorm.

Hope you can join us!

Join us for some bird photography and hopefully one of those fantastic Florida sunsets on Saturday, January 13th. We’ll meet at the Marsh Trail in the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge near Everglades City at 3:30pm. The Marsh Trail follows an old oil well road that was originally built for oil exploration. It’s now only used for recreational purposes, and we’ll be taking full advantage of it!

From the AllTrails.com website:

Head out on this 2.3-mile out-and-back trail near Naples, Florida. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 39 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. You'll need to leave pups at home — dogs aren't allowed on this trail.

The Marsh Trail travels through the wetland environment of the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge and as such the real highlight is the wildlife viewing opportunities. The first section of the trail from the parking lot is made of tarmac and the rest is crushed shell. There are a number of benches along the route at viewpoints. Alligators are often seen in the water so take care on the trail and do not bring pets. A number of canoe routes also begin here.

Please be sure to RSVP so we know you’re coming. Click the button below.

Be aware, it’s approximately 72 miles from the Miccosukee Casino & Resort, so be sure to leave home with plenty of time to arrive promptly.

Sunset is at 5:54pm. Arriving at 3:30pm gives us a couple of hours to photograph birds before setting up for sunset. Hope to see you all there!
