Today is Veterans Day 🎖️, a US Federal holiday, and as such, all public buildings and businesses (including our Pinecrest Library) are closed so that we may recognize the service and sacrifice of all U.S. military veterans. If you are one of them, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! 💖
Since we can’t meet in person, we decided instead to have the meeting VIA ZOOM.
So tonight we’ll discuss taking a leisurely peaceful walk in a cypress dome, knee-to-thigh deep in clean, clear water, amongst the beautiful cypress trees, knees, and beautiful plant life. We will talk about what to expect, what to wear, what gear to bring, and how to immerse yourself safely, comfortably, with the ability to photograph to the best of your ability.
Some food for thought:
According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles organization, in 2025, Miami-Dade County experienced 55,293 total crashes, resulting in 26,684 injuries; approximately 200 of them fatal. That comes to an average of about 154 crashes per day, with 0.72 of them fatal.
Now compare that with the injury/death rate from slough slogging. The Everglades National Park has no record of any injuries or deaths from slough slogging. According to the park website, the activity is considered low‑risk when participants follow the park’s guidelines; which we will go over at the meeting as well. So you’re more at risk driving down to the Everglades than you are walking in them! 😉 The worst that might happen is you lose a shoe. And we’ll discuss that as well.
In the immortal words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!”
Many a wary and leery photographer (including myself) overcame their fears and now fully enjoy going for a “slough slog”. Hopefully, with this meeting, we can convince you of the same. There is no experience quite like it.
