Castellow Hammock is a 112-acre park and preserve that contains a mature tropical hardwood forest with a half-mile self-guided nature trail. The park was named in honor of James S. Castellow, a citrus farmer who homesteaded the property in the early 1900s.
In 1974, the park became one of the first environmental education centers in Miami-Dade County and is popular with birders, butterfly watchers, and botanists. The park serves as a wonderful place for city dwellers to get close to nature and rejuvenate the spirit.
Today we’ll visit the Castellow Hammock and either wait for the hummingbird show to begin, or go off into the hardwood hammock and explore the wonder of this beautiful forest.
Gates open at 9am, so lets meet at the entrance at quarter till (8:45am).
