This month’s “walkabout” will be at the Big Cypress trail called “Tree Snail Hammock Loop”. A pretty and ancient hardwood hammock in the Big Cypress. See the Alltrails website link HERE.
***For folks who aren’t familiar with Loop Road and want to follow me, I will be at the Miccosukee Indian Village parking lot (in front of the Indian wrestling the alligator) at 5:15pm, and will leave for the trail at 5:30pm. Meet me there and we’ll caravan to the trailhead.
Here’s an excerpt from the Big Cypress Loop Road Scenic Drive pamphlet.
Tree Snail Hammock Trail - The Tree Snail Hammock Trail is maintained by Big Cypress National Preserve, and is open to the public. A hardwood hammock is a higher and drier habitat with broadleaf trees such as gumbo limbo. It’s a shady resting place where wildlife can “put their feet up” out of the water. The trail is named for the endemic tree snails that can be found here, surviving the dry season by securing themselves tightly to the trunks of trees. Their shells are beautiful to see, but take care not to harm these delicate creatures. The trail here is short and easy, providing an opportunity to stretch your legs.
We’ll meet up at 6pm for a nice evening stroll to get to know this short and seldom traversed trail. It’s short, less than 0.2 of a mile, but full of photographic possibilities. I thought this might be a nice introduction to the trail so you can come back at another time on your own or with friends, perhaps spend the day here!
Afterwards, we’ll head to another location close by and shoot a sunset if the weather cooperates. Sunset is approximately 7:45pm so that’ll give us plenty of time to explore.
Be sure to RSVP by clicking the button below. Even if you’ve clicked “going” on our Facebook event, a proper RSVP needs to be emailed, just so I know you’ll be there, or in case of any last minute changes. Thanks!!
