February "Walkabout" - Mahogany Hammock

  • Mahogany Hammock Trail (map)

* *Small change in plans. Instead of meeting at Ernest Coe Visitor’s Center at 8:30am, we’ll meet right at the Mahogany Hammock parking lot at 9am. It’s very easy to find. Go through the main park entrance. From there drive the Main Park Road about 20 miles till you see the big brown sign that says “Mahogany Hammock” and turn right. Follow that to the parking lot, about another mile. * *

We’ll meet at the Ernest Coe Visitor’s Center parking lot around 8:15am and leave there at 8:30am sharp. We’ll caravan down to the Mahogany Hammock trail and walk the trail, noticing and experiencing all that this hardwood hammock trail has to offer.

Please RSVP by clicking the button below.

Some of us just explore on these ‘walkabouts’ with just a cell phone to record what we “notice”. The purpose of the “walkabout” is to explore and notice what interests and excites you. Take a mental note (or record it with your phone) of the things you like, consider why this thing caught your eye, and envision what this might look like in different light, with different conditions. Maybe take notes on when you think a particular scene might be ideal and return when those conditions present themselves.

If you prefer to photograph as usual, go right ahead. No rules here. If you do, I’d recommend a tripod and shutter release cable (or use the camera self timer) as inside the hammock it will be very low light and you’ll most likely use longer exposures. As we’ll be inside the hammock, I don’t think a long lens is necessary, but bring it if you so choose. I think a mid-range lens and wide-angle would be plenty. Maybe even a macro lens! Bring what you have.

Keep an eye on the weather. Generally it should be very pleasant and dry, but you never know. As we always recommend in the Everglades, bring bug spray, and wear long sleeves and long pants. Perhaps a bug jacket, sturdy comfortable shoes. Maybe a small cooler with refreshments for afterwards.

Hope to see you all there!
