Dec. Field Trip - Geminid Meteor Shower

  • Ernest Coe Visitors center 40001 State Highway 9336 Homestead, FL, 33034 United States (map)

Time and Dates says…

The Geminids are considered to be one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year, with the possibility of sighting around 120 meteors per hour at its peak, which is on December 13 or 14, depending on your time zone.

The shower owes its name to the constellation Gemini because the meteors seem to emerge from this constellation in the sky.

Lets meet at the Ernest Coe Visitor’s Center at 6pm sharp. We’ll go to our location from there. The most active time for the meteors is in the early morning hours. So get plenty of sleep so you can catch the good stuff!

Be sure to bring snacks and drinks if you plan to be out a while. No need to get dehydrated. Also, see below for recommended gear. Be sure to practice mutual respect. No one likes “that guy” who constantly has his flashlight flickering or the use of colored lights. They’re fine if you’re by yourself, but in a group, big no no.

  • Camera

  • Wide angle lens with widest aperture (smallest number)

  • Tripod

  • Cable Release (or learn how to use your in-camera intervalometer)

  • Fully charged batteries (I’d recommend a couple of them)

  • Mitten or lens warmers (to keep your lens from fogging up)

  • Lawnchair

  • Bug spray (you never know)

  • Anything else to keep comfortable. We’ll be shooting next to our vehicles so bring whatever you may need.

Here’s a table of what to expect and when.
