May Field Trip - Storm Chasing in the Big Cypress

  • HP Williams Roadside Park 12580 Turner River Road Ochopee, FL 34141 (map)

Huge storm cloud and lightning strike from the Road to PaHayOkee, Everglades National Park

Ahhh, late spring in South Florida is the best time to photograph dramatic skies. Barbara Livieri will be leading the field trip showing you different techniques on how to photograph lightning. We will also take advantage of South Florida’s spring/summer storm patterns to photograph dramatic skies and potentially lightning. While every attempt will be made to place the club members in the best location for lightning, we are still at the mercy of Mother Nature. Also, lightning can be very dangerous. We will all be together operating outside the edge of the storms.

We’ll meet at the location listed to the left and talk about the procedures to photograph lightning. What we’ll learn:
•What creates lightning
•Dangers of lightning
•Camera set up
•Shooting with and without a lightning trigger
After that we’ll look at the weather apps and see where the storms are brewing. Then we’ll caravan as a group to find the best location to capture them while keeping ourselves safe.

Disclaimer 1: I can’t predict the weather so if we have no storms at all, we’ll just be doing regular landscapes. (Perhaps Kirby Storter or Fakahatchee Strand, or even Chokoloskee - we’ll decide when the time comes.)

Disclaimer 2: No activity is complete safe. Lightning is DEADLY and can potentially strike from 30-miles away! That being said, we will do all we can to keep out of harms way. If you are uneasy about storms, this might not be the field trip for you.

(And please forgive the photos, they were taken and processed when my processing skills lacked restraint. My theory back then, if a little dehaze was good, a lot was better! haha)
