August Field Trip - Cypress Dome Walk

  • Ernest Coe Visitor Center 40001 State Road 9336 Homestead, FL 33034 USA (map)

We will be walking into a Cypress Dome. A cypress dome is a type of swamp, typically dominated by pond cypress. The trees at the center of the swamp grow higher than the trees at the edge, which forms a dome-like shape of treetops when viewed from a distance.  For todays field trip we will be walking into Movie Dome and if time permits Double Dome. Not many people get to say that they have walked into a Cypress Dome, this is a great opportunity to experience the real Everglades. During this walk you will be surrounded by the sounds of nature, crystal clear water, bromeliads and air plants that fill every tree. You might also get the chance to see alligators, owls, birds and rare wildlife.

WHAT TO WEAR - long pants, a long sleeved shirt, a jacket if you are cold natured, old tennis shoes, bug spray, and a cap with a visor.  Bring a complete change of clothes, most people get wetter than anticipated.  Also remember to bring your camera and a refillable water bottle.

Please note that this is a physical and rigorous walking tour and participants must be in good physical condition to enjoy it.

Here's an example of what a Cypress Dome looks like:
