Oct. Field Trip - Dagny Johnson State Park Key Largo

  • Dagny Johnson State Park County Rd 905 & Mile Marker 106 Key Largo, FL, 33037 United States (map)

Once slated to become a condominium development, this park contains one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States.  The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the American crocodile.  Exploring the park´s trails gives visitors a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals.  Over six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers.  Most of the park's trails are paved and accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs.  Signs along a self-guided nature trail provide information about the park's ecosystem and wildlife.

This park is located on County Road 905, half-mile north of the intersection with U.S. Highway 1 at Mile Marker 106 (near the Circle K gas station). The map feature on this website doesn't recognize the address. If you're using an app, just type in Dagny Johnson and it will locate it. Otherwise, if you go via the 18-Mile Stretch (US1), make a left at the Circle K gas station onto CR 905. Go about a 1/4 mile from there on your right. If you come via Card Sound Road, follow it almost to US 1 and look for the park on your left hand side just before Loquat Drive. The entrance looks like the picture shown here.

For more information on the park, go to their website at  Read on the history and all that's included in the park.

We will be meeting at the entrance at 7:00am before heading in and seeing what the park has to offer.  Perhaps afterward those willing can stop for breakfast at a local Key Largo establishment. To be decided on site.
